The Multiple Inlet Problem of Apartments

      Unfortunately, apartments in India are not constructed to facilitate the need to measure water. Primarily to reduce the implementation cost, the plumbing for an apartment complex is laid in such a manner that each apartment has more that one entry point for water. This fundamental design flaw makes it difficult to measure water consumption of individual apartment.

​  Existing solutions would require an individual water meter to be installed at each water inlet making it hard to take the readings when the water meters are inaccessibly installed. In other cases a complete rework of plumbing lines for the whole apartment complex is required which is a very expensive affair and not preferred if the building is already occupied.

THE SWIMM SOLUTION

     The solution involves an ingenious method of recording the consumption at each water inlet by installing Water Quantifier (Meter) at each entry point. Record and Collect data from each quantifier and displaying it on Central Display Unit (CU) installed in common area or lobby.

​    This comprehensive solution records the consumption of each installed water quantifier as well as provides gross consumption for a flat. This eliminates the tedious task of accessing each installed meter separately. Also it reduces the erroneous task of totaling the consumption for each flat. SWIMM also enables the consumer to monitor his consumption easily and promote self conservation.

SWIMM is a wireless long transmission range solution making it very easy to install with minimal plumbing alterations to existing structure. A simple and user friendly designing requires no expertise in operations and maintenance. Large dual line back-lit LCD display enables reading in low light areas.

   A water qualitfier (Meter) is installed at each inlet of the apartment which records the consumption of water from that inlet. A Central Display Unit (CU) unique for each apartment is installed in the common area like parking or ground floor lobby. Just like electricity meter the Central Display Unit displays the consumption data of an apartment from all the inlets combined. Hence there is always just one total reading per apartment. Consumption from each inlet is also stored in the CU, this ensures data redundancy. The transmission from the WQ to CU is fully encrypted and redundancy checks ensures data reliability. A wireless personal display unit can be installed inside the apartment as well. This duplicates the reading in the common area unit.

   With data available centrally for all apartments it is easy for the supervisor to take note of the reading and an apartment associations is free to choose any utility billing software for calculation. If featured, Associations can use the same software being used for property management by them. Complete human-less operations with SWIMM-CORE ensures that data captured is accurate and error free.

THE ADVANTAGE

      Water is not a free resource anymore hence it makes more sense to pay for what you use. Owners/Residents who are concerned about water conservation can directly benefit with the metered approach. It has been observed in various studies that water consumption reduces by 25% to 30% after installation of water meters. With meter installation and continuous monitoring of water utilization, the user is self motivated to observe water conservation and avoid water wastage.
